Enterprise Starlink & Ubiquiti Network Deployment on Dartmoor
If you live or work in rural Devon, you’ll already know that connectivity is one of the biggest challenges. This particular project was in Dartmoor National Park. Extremely rural. Zero mobile phone signal on any major UK network. Two remote workers completely dependent on WiFi calling and cloud-based systems.
When there is no phone signal and your work relies entirely on the internet, reliability is not optional. It is critical.
The Problem
The property had fibre to the premises via Airband. Speeds were respectable on paper. Around 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload inside the main house. The issue was not speed. It was reliability and coverage.
The connection would fluctuate. Wireless mesh links between buildings were reducing performance. Upload consistency was not good enough for business-critical cloud use. The barn and external working areas were suffering reduced speeds because of wireless hops and thick rural construction.
To make matters more complex, the property sits in a valley with absolutely no mobile signal. WiFi calling was the only way to communicate. If the internet dropped, so did the phones which wasn’t great great for our client who works from home full time. Read on to find out more or watch the full video.
Why Starlink Was the Right Choice
Starlink is often used where fibre is unavailable. In this case, fibre was available but unreliable for this specific application.
What mattered most here was:
- Stable connection
- Strong upload performance
- Consistent latency
- Full-site coverage
- Business continuity
Starlink offers a direct satellite connection that bypasses local wireless tower infrastructure. In rural Devon, that can often mean greater consistency.
This was not just a dish installation. It was a full network redesign.

The Approach
1. Infrastructure First
We hardwired a Cat6 connection from the main house to the barn rather than relying on wireless mesh. Wireless links always reduce performance over distance and through thick walls.
Wherever possible, cable beats wireless.
We installed:
- Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro router
- 60W PoE switches in both house and barn
- Internal access points upstairs and downstairs
- External access points to cover decking, driveway and perimeter
- Dedicated WiFi coverage for WiFi calling
The goal was simple. Full coverage. No dropouts. No weak spots.
2. Starlink Hardware Installation
The larger residential Starlink antenna was pole-mounted with a clear view of the sky. Orientation was adjusted correctly via the Starlink app to eliminate obstructions and optimise satellite tracking.
We placed the Starlink router into bypass mode so that the Ubiquiti Dream Machine handled all routing, security and network management. This keeps the system professional and scalable rather than relying on consumer-grade routing.
Starlink was integrated cleanly into the existing infrastructure.
3. Proper Network Configuration
Once live, we:
- Configured DHCP correctly in the UniFi system
- Adopted and named all access points
- Structured the topology for easy diagnostics
- Ensured PoE power management was correctly distributed
- Tested speeds across internal and external areas
Inside the property we were seeing:
- 300+ Mbps download
- 30+ Mbps upload
- Stable latency
More importantly, WiFi calling was fully operational across the entire site. Even down the lane away from the property, connectivity remained strong.

Coverage Across House, Barn & External Areas
This was not just about internet inside a house.
The client required:
- Coverage in the barn office
- Coverage around the decking
- Coverage around the driveway
- Coverage for outdoor working areas
- Reliable WiFi calling everywhere
By deploying multiple Ubiquiti access points and hardwiring the infrastructure correctly, we achieved seamless roaming and stable performance across the whole property.
In rural Devon, thick walls and distance are common issues. Proper network design solves that.
If you are experiencing weak WiFi, unreliable smart systems or poor coverage in outbuildings, we also provide full home network installation in Devon and throughout the UK.
Built for the Future
The property is undergoing renovation. All equipment has been installed with future reuse in mind.
The system is ready for:
- CCTV expansion
- Additional access points
- Structured data cabinet installation
- Long-term infrastructure upgrades
Everything has been designed so it can scale.
Why This Matters in Rural England
Across Devon and Cornwall, many properties suffer from:
- Poor mobile signal
- Long copper runs
- Inconsistent wireless rural providers
- Thick stone walls
- Multiple outbuildings
Starlink can solve the supply side of the problem. But without proper network design, you will still suffer poor performance internally.
The dish is only part of the solution. The network design is what makes it reliable.
