Heatmiser System Rewire

Heatmiser System Rewire: Fixing Underfloor Heating & Radiator Controls

Project Overview

Every so often, a project comes along that really underlines why a Heatmiser system rewire can be absolutely essential. This particular case involved a large property with underfloor heating across multiple zones, all controlled by a Heatmiser setup that had seen better days.

The homeowner had been struggling for years with inconsistent room temperatures, thermostats that didn’t work properly, and wiring faults that meant whole areas of the house simply wouldn’t heat up. Previous contractors had patched bits here and there, but the problems never went away. By the time we arrived, the underfloor heating system was unreliable, inefficient, and causing no end of frustration.

Our task was clear: carry out a full Heatmiser system rewire, diagnose every underlying issue, and deliver a robust, future-proof smart heating and underfloor heating solution that finally worked the way it should.

Initial Assessment

The first walk-through immediately highlighted the scale of the challenge. The property had a mix of old and new thermostats, poorly installed cabling, and underfloor heating manifolds that were either mislabelled or not labelled at all.

In some rooms, the thermostats were completely dead due to crushed or broken cables hidden in walls. In others, actuators on the underfloor heating manifolds were permanently open, causing certain rooms to overheat. The wiring back at the Heatmiser wiring centres was messy and inconsistent, making fault-finding difficult.

It was clear that the original underfloor heating installation had cut corners, and over time, further “fixes” had only made things worse.

Key Challenges

One of the main challenges with this project was the sheer number of hidden faults. We weren’t just dealing with a straightforward rewire we had to unravel years of poor workmanship across the Heatmiser underfloor heating system.

  • Crushed and damaged thermostat cables buried in plasterboard, which meant entire zones had never worked correctly.
  • Cat5 data cabling used instead of heat-rated flex, brittle and unsafe in this type of installation.
  • Mislabelled or unlabelled manifolds, leaving the homeowner with no idea which actuator controlled which room.
  • Dead thermostats and mismatched models that weren’t compatible with the Heatmiser Neo system.
  • Actuators stuck permanently on, overheating some underfloor heating zones while leaving others cold.

These issues made it impossible for the heating system to function properly and they also meant energy bills were higher than they needed to be.

Our Solution – Full Heatmiser System Rewire

We knew the only way to truly fix the system was to take it back to basics and rebuild it properly.

Wiring Replacement

We stripped out the unsuitable Cat5 cabling and replaced it with heat-rated flexible cabling, designed to cope with the demands of a heating installation. This immediately removed a major source of unreliability and safety concerns.

Thermostat Installation & Calibration

We installed brand new Heatmiser Neo thermostats across the property, paired with the NeoHub to provide central app-based control. Each thermostat was carefully calibrated against professional temperature probes, ensuring precise readings and consistent comfort throughout the home.

In areas where cable damage made wiring impractical, we used wireless thermostats and remote air sensors to achieve the same level of control without chasing out walls.

Underfloor Heating Manifold & Actuator Overhaul

Every underfloor heating manifold was stripped back, relabelled, and reconnected properly. We tested each loop individually, identified which room it served, and marked it clearly. Faulty actuators were replaced, and the wiring centres were tidied and rewired for clarity.

This was a crucial stage. Many of the homeowner’s problems – uneven heating, rooms that never warmed up, and others that were too hot – came down to poor manifold wiring and actuator faults. Once corrected, the underfloor heating system began working as intended.

Zoning & App Integration

Once the rewiring was complete, we set up the entire property within the Heatmiser Neo app, giving the homeowner full control over every zone. Schedules were programmed, booster plugs installed to ensure wireless coverage, and the system was tested thoroughly from both the app and physical thermostats.

Results

The difference was immediate and dramatic. For the first time since the system was installed, every room in the property could be controlled accurately and independently.

  • Balanced comfort: no more overheated bedrooms or freezing lounges.
  • Accurate control: thermostats now report reliable temperatures and respond quickly.
  • Efficient underfloor heating: properly working actuators and rewired manifolds eliminated wasted energy.
  • User-friendly system: the Heatmiser Neo app allows full remote control from anywhere.
  • Future-proof installation: with correct cabling, clear labelling, and modern controls, the homeowner now has a system that will perform reliably for years to come.

The homeowner was thrilled, describing it as the first time they’d ever felt truly in control of their underfloor heating.

Why a Heatmiser System Rewire Matters

Too often, we come across Heatmiser installations that simply haven’t been wired correctly from day one. Whether it’s using the wrong type of cabling, failing to label underfloor heating circuits, or just poor workmanship, the result is always the same: a system that never really works.

A proper Heatmiser system rewire isn’t about patching problems. Instead, it’s about rebuilding the installation correctly, so that the technology can do what it was designed to do. With the right wiring, modern thermostats, and thorough commissioning, Heatmiser systems are incredibly reliable and efficient.

This case study is a perfect example of how taking the time to do things properly can completely transform a homeowner’s heating experience.
